Frequently asked questions

The things people usually ask before their first chat with a broker.

Getting started

Does comparing lenders affect my credit score?

No. Getting matched with a broker and an initial indication of what is available does not require a credit enquiry. A credit check only happens once you decide to apply with a specific lender.

Is there any cost to use The Finance Club?

No. Our service is free. Brokers are generally paid a commission by the lender when a loan settles, and we may receive a referral fee from the broker. If a fee applies to your loan, your broker will tell you in writing before you proceed.

How does The Finance Club work?

We’re a referral service. We pass your enquiry to a specialist broker from our partner network, who compares lenders and helps you apply. Brokers are usually paid a commission by the lender once the loan settles, not a fee charged to you. Your broker will explain exactly how a given deal is structured before you proceed. You can read more in our credit guide.

How long does approval take?

It depends on the loan. Some lenders can give an answer on car, personal and business finance quickly once your documents are in. Home loans take longer, and your broker will keep you updated at every stage.

Applying

What documents will I need?

Commonly proof of identity, proof of income (payslips, or tax returns or BAS if self-employed), recent bank statements and details of the asset you are buying. Your broker will confirm exactly what is needed for your situation.

Can I apply if I am self-employed?

Yes. Self-employed applicants are common across every loan type. Our partner brokers work with lenders with both full-doc and low-doc options depending on how long you have been trading.

Can I finance a private sale?

Yes, for most vehicles and many assets. We check the asset for money owing on the PPSR and pay the seller directly once the loan is approved.

Can I apply with a partner or co-borrower?

Yes. Applying jointly can increase borrowing power. Both applicants will need to provide identification and income details.

Credit history

Can I still get approved with a less-than-perfect credit history?

Possibly. Some lenders our partner brokers work with look beyond a single credit score and consider your current situation. Your broker will be upfront about what is realistically available and what it will cost.

What is the difference between a soft and a hard credit check?

A soft check lets a lender get an indicative read without it being recorded as a credit enquiry. A hard check is a formal enquiry recorded on your credit file, and only happens when you choose to proceed with an application.

How can I improve my chances of approval?

Check your credit report for errors, pay down or close unused credit cards, avoid multiple applications in a short time and keep your bank statements tidy for a few months before applying.

After you apply

What happens after I submit a quote request?

A broker will contact you, usually within one business day, to understand your needs, confirm documents and talk you through suitable options.

Am I obligated to accept an offer?

No. You can decide not to proceed at any point before you sign the loan contract.

Can I pay my loan off early?

Many loans allow extra repayments or early payout. Some fixed-rate loans have early exit fees. Your broker will show you the terms before you choose.
